Taking the long view... - a photo on Flickriver

            This Great Blue Heron had just ingested a medium sized fish just before I took this photo. It seemed quite happy to rest for a little while, probably waiting for the fish to settle down a bit in its stomach. 

Thinking that the term stomach might not apply to birds, I did some research and it turns out that the stomach in most birds is composed of the proventriculus, like a storage area, and a gizzard, a muscular portion that functions like mammalian teeth. The food starts its break down in the proventriculus and then the function of mastication by the gizzard. Wow. And then I found out that herons don't have gizzards.
