Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) comes in to land

            This Great Blue Heron flew across the lake at Lake Artemesia in College Park, Maryland. I captured the heron as it came in to land at the edge of the lake and it's using it's wings to slow down. I think the feathers are showing a stall as they are flipping up on the back of the bird indicating that air is no longer flowing over the feathers, just what the bird wants as it settles into the water. This was may favorite image from the sequence of shots as I love the wings stretched out this way. It shows them off in all their glory!

Captured with a Canon 7D Mark II with Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 OS DG HSM Sports lens on 16 December 2015.
