Manchester Airport train heads south under West Approach Road, Edinburgh.

            In a picture taken from the new Roseburn-Union Canal link cycleway/footpath, the rear of 1M87 1212 hrs Edinburgh Waverley-Manchester Airport operated by CAF built Class 397 EMU, unit 397001, was seen as it went under Edinburgh’s West Approach Road. The road at this point uses the onetime Wester Dalry branch opened 1876) of the Caledonian Railway - the original three arch viaduct over Russell Road is still extant. The train itself is at this point on the former ex-CR Haymarket branch (opened 1853) which was connected to the ex-NB lines at Haymarket in 1964 thus enabling West Coast line trains to use Waverley Station. This finally enabled BR to close the former Caledonian station at Princes Street in 1965. The TransPennine Express train will pick up the original Caledonian route to Carstairs at Slateford Junction. This particular service was eventually terminated at Preston owing to a train crew issue. The train operating company began service on this route in December 2007. The twelve five car Class 397 trains were introduced in 2020. The steelwork on the horizon is Tynecastle Park, home of Heart of Midlothian FC
