Stagecoach East Scotland 27139 at Saint Andrew Square, Edinburgh.

During the Coronavirus crisis, the much reduced Stagecoach East Scotland services from Edinburgh over the bridge to Fife are using the north side of Saint Andrew Square rather than the bus station. The Plaxton Panther coaches have disappeared and on Day 15 of the lockdown, fleet number 27139 awaits departure - and passengers. The former Scottish Equitable head office was the building behind the front of the bus. Straight ahead, between Louis Vuitton and Harvey Nichols, is the traffic free Multrees Walk shopping precinct, built on the site where Scottish Omnibuses opened their Saint Andrew Square Bus Station in 1957. Closed in 2000 and redeveloped for shops and offices, the new Edinburgh Bus Station (opened 2003) occupies a smaller footprint behind and at a lower level than Louis Vuitton. Edinburgh’s new tramway (opened 2014) runs L to R in front of Multrees Walk. All sides of the Square once had tram rails - the east side from 1872 and the west, north and south sides from 1925.
