Die Brennerbahn (italienisch Ferrovia del Brennero) wurde von 1864 bis 1867 nach Plänen und unter der Leitung von Karl Etzel von der k.k. priv. Südbahn-gesellschaft als Teil der Verbindung von Kufstein nach Ala (und weiter in Richtung Verona) gebaut. Als Brennerbahn wird die Teilstrecke mit der Überquerung des Alpenhauptkamms von Innsbruck über den Brennerpass und Bozen nach Verona bezeichnet. Die Brennerbahn nimmt in Nordtirol ihren Anfang, durchquert Südtirol und das Trentino und endet in Venetien. Die Trasse verläuft dabei durch das Wipptal, Eisacktal und Etschtal. Die Brennerbahn ist Bestandteil der Eisenbahnachse Berlin–Palermo. Im Rahmen der Projektierung des Brennerbasistunnels samt Zulaufstrecken sollen umfangreiche Abschnitte durch neue Tunnels ergänzt werden.  (Wikipedia)
