Adelaide - South Australian Naval Memorial Garden: Phineas Davies headstone as headpiece after some years at HMAS Encounter, originally at Cheltenham Cemetery for 100 years. South Australia

            To celebrate the 49th anniversary of the founding of South Australia, the HMCS Protector was to fire a twenty-one gun salute at Glenelg: Davies died after the ninth gun. Immediately after the accident the Commander, Captain Walcot, ordered "cease firing" and the vessel, shortly afterwards, returned to anchorage. 
This tombstone marked the site of his grave in Cheltenham Cemetery for 100 years and was claimed by the Royal Australian Navy in December 1986. It was installed as the headpiece of the South Australian Naval memorial Garden at HMAS Encounter until the Garden was relocated to its present site in April 1995.
The garden has many plaques commemorating the men and women who served in the Royal Australian Naval Service: there are also references to vessels and their crew members.
The South Australian Naval Memorial Garden was officially opened by Commander C J Bates, ADC, RAN Senior Naval Representative, South Australia on 8 April 1995.

The remains of the late Phineas Philip Davies, who was killed by an explosion on the Protector at Glenelg on Commemoration Day, were interred in the Woodville Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon with military and naval honours. Davis, who was a native of New Zealand, joined the Protector on May 1 for three months, and then joined for three years. He was only 21 years old, and is said by his comrades to have been the finest built man on board.
