            Hallett Hall - former Hallett Institute

Foundation stone laid by Lily Margaret Melrose on November 28, 1928.
Opened in 1929, the hall replaced the Institute of 1879. Downstairs was a hall, committee room, supper room and library. The upstairs billiard room later became the Hallett District Council Office. The Council subsequently moved downstairs until it became part of the Regional Council of Goyder in 1997. 
A new supper room was added in 1960 following a donation by Mrs Lily Owen Smythe in memory of her father Sir John Melrose, on condition it also serve as a club room for the Hallett Red Cross and CWA branches. The 1980s and 1990s saw major renovations and redesigning of the supper room for Hallett District Council meetings. 
Since 1988 it has been known as the Hallett Hall.

Hallett is situated on the Barrier Highway 192 km north of Adelaide. Average rainfall is 422mm.

The Hallett brothers, John and Alfred, arrived in the district in the 1840s. In 1842 John selected a run known at Willogoleche which covered an area from Hallett to Burra.
This town was name for them. The two main streets are named John and Alfred and the three transversing streets are named Richard, Jessie and Julia after three of John’s children.

In 1865 George Goyder established Goyder’s Line, which has proven to be a reliable divide between land suitable for farming and that suited to pastoral pursuits.

Gold nuggets were found at Ulooloo in 1869. By 1886 £18,000 worth of gold had passed through the Hallett Post Office, with (it is believed) an almost equivalent amount being used for trade and barter.

The District Council of Hallett was formed in 1877 and included the towns of Whyte Yarcowie and Terowie. All three were once bustling towns servicing the surrounding farming properties.

With state wide amalgamation of council areas in 1997 the Hallett District Council became part of the Regional Council of Goyder.

The area is noted for its merino sheep breeding, and the successful cropping of wheat, barley, oats and Lucerne.
