Gantheaume Point and Indian Ocean on Roebuck Bay near Broome, Western Australia

            Gantheaume Point was named in 1801 by Nicolas Baudin after the French Naval Admiral, Joseph Gantheaume.
Broome was gazetted as a town in 1883 as a rapidly growing pearling port, and by 1901 the need for a light to guide shipping around Gantheaume Point was recognised.
The first lighthouse was commissioned in 1905, completed in 1906 with a four roomed keeper's house and stone fireplace.
In 1917 a new lighthouse was built using acetylene as fuel. This automated the lighthouse and brought to an end Gantheaume Point's history with a resident keeper. The keeper's quarters were sold, and eventually burned down leaving only the stone fireplace and chimney.
The second lighthouse stood until it was replaced in 1984 by the current stainless steel tower, with electric light.
