Brisbane - Anzac Square South African Memorial/Boer War Memorial side 2. Queensland

            Opened in 1930, Queensland heritage listed Anzac Square is the State War Memorial of Queensland; a significant public and historical site dedicated to the men and women who have served their country in conflict and in peace since the Boer War. 

It is also known as 9th Battalion Memorial and Queensland Women’s War Memorial.

Located in the centre of Brisbane, with the spectacular Shrine of Remembrance and Eternal Flame burning at its heart, Anzac Square provides permanent recognition for those who fought and died in the service of our nation and preserves their legacy by offering generations of Queenslanders a place to reflect on their bravery and sacrifice.
Anzac Square commemorates all Queenslanders who participated in war. In 1928 a competition for the design of a Shrine of Remembrance was won by Sydney architects Buchanan and Cowper.
On Armistice Day 11 November 1930 the Queensland Governor Sir John Goodwin dedicated the Shrine and the Square.

A memorial commissioned by the 9th Battalion (AIF) Association was mounted in the Crypt and unveiled by the Australian Governor-General Lord Gowrie on 17 August 1937. Commemorating the battalion's 45 officers and 1048 other ranks who lost their lives in the war, it was undertaken by former Brisbane sculptor William Leslie Bowles at a cost of £500. Bowles was noted for his memorial work, having been head sculptor at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra during the years 1924 t0 1931.

The Women’s Memorial was erected by Queensland women in memory of the fallen of World War One. This memorial which is sculptured on the western wall of Anzac Square takes the form of a sculptured panel of infantry and horse drawn guns.  In front of the memorial there is a sandstone drinking fountain supported by four bronze fish. 
During the late 1920's the Brisbane Women's Club came up with the idea of contributing to a State War Memorial. They appealed not only to women's organizations throughout Queensland but also to women in general, to support the idea. In 1929 they awarded the commission of the memorial to female sculptor Daphne Mayo. The memorial was unveiled by Lady Goodwin on the 24th March 1932. 
In May 1930 at a meeting held in Anzac Square, the Lord Mayor said the proposal of a Women's Memorial had the full support of the Anzac Memorial Committee. The idea of the memorial had started as a tribute from the women of Queensland and the practical idea of fountains with facilities for drinking water had been chosen. Donations of one shilling from as many women in Queensland as possible were required to make it possible to carry out the scheme with the objective being 10,000 shillings. Daphne Mayo outlined her design at the meeting. Daphne Mayo was assisted by George Harvey.

South African War Memorial is a heritage-listed memorial at ANZAC Square, 228 Adelaide Street, Brisbane City, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was sculpted by James Laurence Watts from 1912 to 1919. It is also known as Boer War Memorial and The Scout.
