H2 vs Pentamatic... 1960

Both cameras were designed and produced in 1959. These two look to be from mid 1960 (the Yashica was made in May). The Pentamatic was Yashica's first ever SLR while the H2 was the next step for the Asahi Optical Company to take while building on their successful earlier SLRs. Since both were on dealer's shelves at the same time, they were naturally competing with one another.
Yashica was well established by 1959 and had a great reputation as a builder of high quality twin-lens reflex cameras, movie cameras and 35mm rangefinder and viewfinder cameras when the H2 came along.
The Asahi Pentax models became very successful and were mainstays throughout the 1960s. The Pentamatic... not so much. The Pentamatic series (Pentamatic 35, Pentamatic II and the Pentamatic S) were gone in a little over 2 years. Of course Yashica followed that series up with a super successful line of M42 screw mount lens bodies that by the end of the 1960s and into the early 1970s were at the top of the experienced amateur's choice for photography. Yashica never aspired to crack or compete for the professional market.
