Biblioteca Pública Arús (Barcelona)

La Biblioteca Pública Arús va ser fundada per Rossend Arús i Arderiu com a biblioteca general l’any 1895, amb la voluntat d’instruir el poble de Barcelona. Actualment, s’ha convertit en una biblioteca de recerca especialitzada en maçoneria, moviment obrer, anarquisme i l’univers de Sherlock Holmes. Així mateix, conserva un fons patrimonial molt important format per documents relatius a tot el coneixement humà, amb un predomini d’obres publicades al segle XIX i primer terç del XX.
Rossend Arús i Arderiu va néixer a Barcelona el 1844, fill de Pere Arús i Cuixart, distingit comerciant adroguer d’ultramarins i colonials, i en especial de colorants per a la indústria del tèxtil, provinent d’una família benestant de l’Hospitalet de Llobregat, i de Teresa Arderiu i Pons, natural de Das (Cerdanya). La bonhomia jove i festiva i el seu esperit satíric i crític l’acompanyaren tota la vida, però no n’impediren, sinó tot el contrari, un continuat compromís amb la defensa de la democràcia, la ideologia republicana federal, el catalanisme d’esquerres, el lliure pensament i la francmaçoneria. Fou, alhora, un filantrop sincer preocupat profundament pel progrés de la gent que l’envoltava.
