Das Belvedere auf dem Pfingstberg ist ein zum Ensemble Potsdamer Schlösser und Gärten gehörendes Schloss nördlich des Neuen Gartens. Das Schloss befindet sich auf dem Pfingstberg, der mit 76 m höchsten Erhebung im westlich der Havel gelegenen Teil Potsdams. Es wurde wegen der schönen Aussicht unter Friedrich Wilhelm IV. errichtet und ist nur ein Teil eines ursprünglich wesentlich umfangreicheren Bauvorhabens. Die Doppelturmanlage nach Vorbildern der italienischen Renaissance erlebte zwei Bauphasen, deren erste von 1847 bis 1852 war und deren zweite nach längerer Unterbrechung von 1860 bis 1863 folgte. Nach Entwurfszeichnungen des Königs erhielten die Architekten Ludwig Persius, Friedrich August Stüler und Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse den Auftrag zur Bauausführung.
Das Belvedere hatte den 2. Weltkrieg nahezu unbeschadet überstanden. Doch Vernachlässigung und Vandalismus seit den 60-er Jahren führten zu heftigem Verfall. Es grenzt an ein Wunder, dass es jetzt wieder in alter Schönheit erstanden ist. The Belvedere on Pfingstberg hill, the highest elevation in the western part of Potsdam, 76 m above sea level, is a palace north of the New Garden belonging to the ensemble of Potsdam Palaces and Gardens. It was built because of the beautiful view under Friedrich Wilhelm IV. The double tower complex, modelled on the Italian Renaissance, underwent two construction phases, the first from 1847 to 1852 and the second after a long interruption from 1860 to 1863. According to the king's design drawings, the architects Ludwig Persius, Friedrich August Stüler and Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse were commissioned to carry out the construction.
The building, nearly intact at the end of World War II, had become a ruin by neglect and vandalism since the 60s. The GDR authorities had no interest in its conservation because of the vicinity to the extraterritorial soviet quarter which might have been overlooked from there. Moreover, it would have allowed a closer look on the border fortifications to near West Berlin. Since 1988, with reluctant consent by the authorities, a group of young Potsdam volunteers had started to clean the park around the Belvedere.
