Berlin-Kladow, Landhausgarten Dr. Max Fränkel: Kartoffelblüten im Gemüsegarten - Potato flowers in the vegetable garden

            1925 bis 1933 schuf Erwin Barth, Stadtgartendirektor in Charlottenburg und Berlin, als sein letztes Werk ein Gartenparadies für den Bankdirektor Dr. Max Fränkel. Der Tod Erwin Barths und die Machtergreifung der Nazis verhinderten 1933 die endgültige Fertigstellung des Werks, denn das geplante Sommerhaus wurde nie gebaut. Dr. Fränkel musste 1937 wegen seiner jüdischen Herkunft emigrieren. In den folgenden Jahrzehnten verwahrloste der Garten und wurde unter anderem als Zollstation während der deutschen Teilung genutzt. Auch ein Angelverein fand hier sein Zuhause und baute auf den Gartenterrassen Ferienhäuser für seine Mitglieder. Anfang der 90-er Jahre wurde mit der Wiederherstellung des Gartens begonnen. Seit März 2016 ist der Garten nun öffentlich zugänglich.
 
From 1925 to 1933, the famous landscape architect Erwin Barth (formerly director of the gardens of Charlottenburg and Berlin), created this garden paradise for the bank director Dr. Max Fränkel. It was to be his last work. The death of Erwin Barth and the seizure of power by the nazi regime stopped in 1933 the completion of the project. The planned summer house was never built. In 1937, Dr. Max Fränkel had to emigrate because of his jewish descendance. In the following decades the garden was left to abandon. During the years of German separation, it was used partly for the installation of a customs station for controlling ships crossing the near border between East Germany and West Berlin and partly for an angling club that built cottages for its members on the garden terraces. The restoration of the long forgotten garden started in the early 1990s. It was reinaugurated in March, 2016, as a public garden.
