            Il y eut tout d'abord deux brèches dans le cadre épistémologique de la science classique. La brèche microphysique révéla l'interdépendance du sujet et de l'objet, l'insertion de l'aléa dans la connaissance, la déréification de la notion de matière, l'irruption de la contradiction logique dans la description empirique ; la brèche macro-physique unit en une même entité les concepts jusqu'alors absolument hétérogènes d'espace et de temps et brisa tous nos concepts dès lors qu'ils étaient emportés au-delà de la vitesse lumière. Mais ces deux brèches, pensa-t-on, étaient infiniment loin de notre monde, l'une dans le trop petit, l'autre dans le trop grand. Nous ne voulions pas nous rendre compte que les amarres de notre conception du monde venaient de se briser aux deux infinis, que nous étions, dans notre « bande moyenne », non sur le sol ferme d'une île environnée par l'océan, mais sur un tapis volant.

Il n'y a plus de sol ferme, la « matière » n'est plus la réalité massive élémentaire et simple à laquelle on pouvait réduire la physis. L'espace et le temps ne sont plus des entités absolues et indépendantes.
