Adult White-tailed Ptarmigan (Lagopus leucura) - Illal Mtn, BC

I took the young birders on a 13.5 km round trip hike up Illal Mtn and we were lucky to find 5 White-tailed Ptarmigan. This is a bird our group has been searching for such a long time. It was a lifer for most of the youth and it made my day to finally be able to share such joy with them. It is not an easy bird to find you can see how they blend into their surroundings. As a group we have been on 9 alpine hikes to find this bird all over the province so I had a few tears of joy when I saw how happy the kids were. I have seen Ptarmigan many times on my own or with other adults but never with my young birders group and I really wanted it for them. Thanks to Katya for being the first to spot them!
