Lion Park, Johannesburg (South Africa)

            Four month old male lion at "safari park" between Johannesburg and Pretoria.  Lion Park, unfortunately, is in the news today because an American tourist was killed by a lion who came through an open automobile window and killed the tourist.  The park offers a self-drive experience, which is safe as long as you keep your windows closed and doors locked.  (Lion Park was also the site of a recent video showing a lioness opening a car door.)  Lion Park seemed quite well-run and efficient and safe, as long as the tourist followed the instructions, which were posted all around.

In addition to the self-drive you are allowed to visit young lions in an enclosure and this was when this image was made.  This four month old male was with his sister and we interacted with them for some time; in fact this young male had grabbed my wife's leg, actually her slacks, before being scolded by the park personnel who were closeby - you can see that picture in my South Africa album.  He then crawled on top of a large boulder and seemed to pout!   We're hoping that this male (four months old in September, 2009) was not the killer.
