DSC_7488 AMS Nieuwe Kerk Vaulted Stained Glass

            When the Oude Kerk became too small for the growing population of the city and the congregation, building a second parish was approved.  Construction began in 1380 and was completed in 1408.The church, named Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), was damaged by the devastating city fires in 1421 and 1452 and was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1645. It was subsequently rebuilt in the current Gothic style.  It is no longer used for regular worship services; the ownership having been transferred to a cultural foundation.  It is now used as an exhibition facility, for organ recitals and Dutch royal investiture ceremonies and royal weddings.
