DSC_1617 Dangling by a rebar thread at terminus

            As I was returning from Bellingham, WA, on Sunday, I decided to drive over Steven's Pass (SR 2). The steady rain had lightened to a misting so I decided I'd try to locate the Iron Goat Trail that connects to the site of the Wellington train disaster that killed 96 people on March 1, 1910. 

In short, a passenger train departed from Spokane bound for Seattle and was stranded by a blizzard. The train and passengers sat on the tracks for six days waiting out the storm when an avalanche a quarter mile wide roared down the Windy Mountain and swept the train into a ravine below. There were 23 survivors. 

Snowsheds and tunnels were built in subsequent years but the line was ultimately abandoned and is now a hiking pathway along the deteriorating ruins. 

There are several trails, one of which makes a loop that is 6.7 miles long with one segment that involves an elevation gain of a bit over 700 feet in the course of a mile reaching an elevation of 2,800 feet
