Lovely Lipotriches

            Lipotriches (Austronomia) australica on a clover flower in our front yard. There are many of these bees living in holes in the ground in our garden. We bought the property a year ago and the front yard was scrappy and poorly maintained with patches of bare dirt. Weeds grew all over the dirt and I have seen these bees descending into their nest burrows beneath the dense mat of clover, as well as on more exposed areas on its perimeter. We are planting a lot of native flowering plants in the front garden now but they are all small and have few flowers at present, so we have decided to leave the clover patch for the meantime for the bees while our plants get established.
