Wupatki National Monument - The Citadel

            The Wupatki National Monument is located in north-central Arizona, just north of Sunset Crater, near Flagstaff.

The Native American ruins were built by Ancient Pueblo People, specifically the Cohonina, Kayenta Anasazi, and Sinagua.

Wupatki was first inhabited around 500 AD.  It was abandoned around 1225 AD.

While we were visiting the Citadel pueblo ruins, a freak thunderstorm came up suddenly.  It was really eerie because it got dark so fast in the middle of the afternoon.

This is the Pueblo silhouetted against the darkening sky. 

We visited the monument in August 1981.
