Keswick Launch.

            Boating on Derwentwater and all the larger lakes has always been a popular activity for both commercial and leisure reasons.. In Elizabethan times boats were used to supply and transport the miners and their equipment to the many mine workings in the hills around the lake. 
It was the activities of a certain Joseph Pocklington  towards the latter half of the eighteenth century that saw a rapid increase in water activity on the lake. This rather eccentric individual fought mock battles on the lake and held popular regatters.
Romanticism and the increase in tourism in the Lakes led to a flurry of hotel building and amenity development throughout the nineteenth century and the owner of the Ladore Hotel purchased a 53 seater launch for the convenience of his guests, the Lorna Doone. Road surfaces in Borrowdale left a lot to be desired, water transport was quicker and offered greater comfort.
Until 1935 lots of enterprising concerns vied for custom to provide leisure trips on the lake but in that year they decided to amalgamate and the Keswick Upon Derwentwater Launch Company was formed. It has gone from strength to strength and its beautifully designed launches are a popular feature for all visitors to the area. No better way to see the lake than in a trip in the launch. even using the launch to shorten the walk around the lake as there are eight stopping places on the circuit.
For many years I took parties from school to Hawse End and on the Friday would catch the launch to Keswick and walk, what we called The five woods walk and then catch the launch back to the centre. Near perfect end to the week and, astonishing to report, nearly always under a blue sky.
