Bodie Island Sunrise Glory - a photo on Flickriver

Bodie Island Lighthouse, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Outer Banks, North Carolina

This beautiful lighthouse was built in 1872 and stands 156 feet (48 m) tall. It is one of only a dozen tall brick tower lighthouses remaining intact in America, and one of the few with an original first-order Fresnel lens which allows its light to project much farther out to sea than normal lenses. It was transferred to the National Park Service as part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore in 1953. When park rangers are present you can climb to the top for a wonderful view of the area.

Bodie Island is one of those rare places where both sunrise and sunset can be truly beautiful at both times of the day. I recommend you go out to the viewing pier out on an interior lake of the island to enjoy this area. And I highly recommend late September to early October as the ideal time to go to OBX, if you can avoid the hurricanes that happen frequently in that time of year.

I ran into another photographer here, a fine gentleman who I had a wonderful conversation with on just this subject. October was the right time, as he put it, due to less heat, less humidity, fewer people and even fewer mosquitos. Exactly.

Manual settings, tripod, Lee ND and CPL filters, and Capture One Pro post-processing. Shot with my old F-mount 18-300mm lens using the FTZ converter. No loss of clarity at all here.
