Beauty and The Iron Beast - a photo on Flickriver

Durango & Silverton K-36 locomotive # 486 makes its daily run up from Durango alongside the Animas River up to Silverton, Colorado in beautiful autumn.

Twice a day from May through October these historic trains run tourists, hikers, mountain bikers, packages and supplies up through the rugged river canyons of the San Juan Mountains to the old mining town.

Both towns benefit from the heritage railroad by income and logistics provided by the train. D&SNG’s estimated annual positive economic impact for the region was nearly $200 million in 2019.

While this photo is from 2018, I am posting it now due to the fall colors, and also due to news that this wonderful piece of history will survive, at least for now.

The privately owned narrow gauge railroad has been running steam locomotives and historic rolling stock continuously on 45 miles of track since 1882. But D&SNG has been through very hard times lately from the 416 fire, lawsuits, a bridge washout and finally the pandemic.

But good news, D&SNG just received a $1.9M Federal grant to replace a badly aging bridge that eventually would have prevented the train from reaching Silverton, negatively impacting both towns.

The old iron beast will ride again, and those of us who appreciate this rare piece of living history can celebrate its continued service.
