Last of 100...now silent... - a photo on Flickriver

White's Ferry, Virginia.

The mighty Potomac River is incredibly important to the history of the USA, as it forms the main border between two of the original thirteen colonies in the Union, between Maryland and Virginia. It flows from the Allegheny Plateau in West Virginia, past Harper’s Ferry, Great Falls and Washington D.C, and empties 302 miles (486 km) later into famous Chesapeake Bay.

Here at White’s Ferry, the last of many working ferries continued to provide easy and quick crossing between Virginia and Maryland, at least until shut down by a judge...

Until the age of the automobile and modern bridges, there were 100 of these boats on the Potomac River, but over time they have all passed into history except for this lone survivor. A ferry has worked this gentle part of the Potomac since 1786. It had been in the same family for 75 years...

Yet on December 28, 2020, the ferry was forced to cease operations following a Circuit Court judge's opinion in a private lawsuit over the use of private land for the ferry landing in Virginia.

The nearest bridges are 17 miles to the north at Point of Rocks Maryland and 30 miles to the south at the American Legion Memorial Bridge (which happens to be I-495, a parking lot otherwise disguised as a highway, at least during rush hour).

The nearby farming community around Poolesville Maryland has lost about 20% of its business due to the closure of White’s Ferry. It used to be about 5 minutes and was only a $5 charge to cross; now that same commute can be hours with traffic in the area, which is getting worse by the year.

In spite of the study showing the negative impacts to local economy and traffic due to the closure, it remains closed. Only the lawyers won.
