Delicate Arch with the Moon - a photo on Flickriver

Delicate Arch is the most famous formation in Arches National Park, but getting there takes a little dedication. Many of the other arches such as Double Arch are easily accessible by the park’s roads, but not this shot here. It’s a 1.5 mile hike uphill and while interesting with varying terrain, the park has rated this overall 480 foot climb as “Difficult”. For the young and physically fit it’s actually more of a moderate hike, and well worth the effort with impressive views.

Note the happy photographers on the left for scale. Most shots of this formation do not convey the immense size of this 52 foot (16 meter) arch. A closer view is here at this link.

Sunset is of course the absolute best time to visit, when the deep hues of dark orange and pink stand out beautifully, and shadows give rich depth to the setting. Stay for sunset but be sure to bring a flashlight, you will need it on the way back to your car. Trust me.
