F2 International Trophy, Silverstone, 30.3.84

The first free practice session on Friday was wet, but Jo Gartner is now having slicks fitted to his Emco/Milde Sorte Spirit 201B BMW-Mader. His small team was managed by his partner Nelly, who is keeping him updated via the radio link. Running out of the Minardi factory and using Mader engines and Michelin tyres, Jo qualified 9th and ran in 5th place for much of the race after an excellent start. Unfortunately, ‘a loud explosion’ in the back of the car caused his retirement on lap 29. Jo was a brave and talented journeyman racer who often had to be his own chief mechanic, marketing man and sometimes team manager as well. This outing was the first of a couple of F2 races planned before making the move up to F1 with Osella, with whom he participated in eight Grands Prix during the 1984 season, but he failed to score any points. Jo came very close to getting a drive with Arrows for 1985, but after that fell through, he moved to sportscars endurance racing to facilitate a return to Formula 1. It was going well, with a Sebring win to his credit, before he suffered a mechanical failure at high speed in a Porsche 962 at the 1986 Le Mans, and succumbed instantly to his injuries. A winner in Super Vee, the European Touring Car Championship and Formula 2, Gartner gained a reputation as a popular, determined man and is sadly missed.
