Appuldurcombe House - centre of the east front

            Appuldurcombe House is a baroque mansion updated in the early nineteenth century, once perhaps the grandest house on the Isle of Wight.  The house was left empty and decaying from the early twentieth century and by the 1950s was a complete ruin.  English Heritage, which now owns Appuldurcombe, has replaced windows and roofs on the east front to give some idea of its original appearance but the rest of the house remains a shell.
