HMS Duchess - a photo on Flickriver

HMS Duchess

            HMS but only just- the RN Daring arriving in Sydney Harbour in April 1964 to take the place of the lost HMAS Voyager.
Transferred on loan, she was eventually purchased outright in 1972 and never saw Britain again (though she did rub shoulders with some of her UK sisters during operations in coming years).
She was placed on display at Circular Quay before sailing to Williamstown for a refit- her first in four years during which she worked hard in the Far East.
Her smart appearance, it was said, belied her material state: much money was spent to keep her at sea until she eventually retired as a training ship in 1977.
She was one of four of her class with AC electricals and was configured to accept the Seacat missile system, though it was never fitted.
Known around the dockyards as "Her Grace".
