ex USS Goldsborough - a photo on Flickriver

            Another view taken shortly after arrival from the US, in 1994. Behind is her Australian sister HMAS Brisbane, maybe awaiting spare parts!
The main difference between US and Aust ships was between the funnels (smokestacks sorry). Goldsborough has her ASROC launcher still mounted while Australian ships had a magazine for the two Ikara launchers.
These destroyers were the first American purchases by the RAN  and introduced a whole new lexicon and philosophy in terms of operation and support.
From around that time (in the mid 60s) the RAN moved ever closer to the USN, including the adoption of USN style side numbers.
Concurrently Australia became involved in the Vietnam conflict with the US while the UK contracted from east of Suez.
