Baby butcherbird seeking refuge - a photo on Flickriver

            Alerts are still in place for heavy rain, damaging winds and wild surf covering an area the size of Alaska. Over 100 rivers have flooded and around 10 million Australians in every mainland state and territory (except WA) are currently under a warning as two major weather systems collided this past week. The heaviest falls have been along the east coast where I live. The contrast to last summer's inferno couldn't be greater, but equally as extreme.

I stood by the back door a few days ago watching the deluge and suddenly this little bird flew in; went from potted plant to potted plant, then stood right by me for a good while. It's a juvenile grey butcherbird, drenched and probably exhausted dealing with the ongoing weather.

A poignant and moving moment and as if I needed reminding, I thought about the plight of all plants and animals at such times.
