A lucky shot - Pileated Woodpecker - a photo on Flickriver

            I've never gotten this close to a Pileated Woodpecker before! In my experience they have always been very shy and unwilling to engage, but on this freezing cold day this female was busy carving a hole out of a tree hunting for ants and didn't notice my approach! I got a few snaps but very few were in focus and sharp given the activity and shooting through snowy branches! A wonderful morning and well worth the drive on snow covered roads to Riverwood.
