The Chapter House / Kapitelhuset, Visby, Gotland

            The Chapter-house is unique in its kind in Visby. The ground-floor was built in the first half of the 13th century and contained two vaulted stores. Of the upper storey of that time there is only as much preserved that it can be concluded that is was supplied, along the street, with a balcony residing on beams from the wall. Already in the middle-ages the upper part of the house was rebuilt and a barrel-vaulted hall was obtained. It had an open arcade facing the street and a triple-window at one end-wall. It was accessible by a stairs leading from the back of the yard. The original use of the house is unknown. The denomination "the Chapter-house", known since the end of the 17th C, indicates a function in the service of Church. The house is owned by the Visby parish.

Kapitelhuset är en medeltida byggnad av i Visby unikt slag. Bottenvåningen uppfördes under 1200-talets förra hälft och innehöll två välvda förrådsrum. Av den dåvarande övre våningen finns endast så mycket bevarat, att det kan faststäl-las att den varit försedd med en svalgång på gatusidan vilande på inmurade bjäl-kar. Redan på medeltiden ombyggdes husets övre delar så att en stor tunnvälvd sal erhölls. Den hade öppen arkad mot gatan och en trefönstergrupp på ena gaveln. Den var tillgänglig via en fritrappa på gårdssidan. Husets ursprungliga användning är okänd. Benämningen "Kapitelshuset", som är belagd från slutet av 1600-talet, antyder en funktion i kyrkans tjänst. Ägare är Visby församling.
