HMS af Chapman, Stockholm - a photo on Flickriver

The af Chapman, formerly the Dunboyne (1888–1915) and the G.D. Kennedy (−1923), is a full-rigged steel ship moored on the western shore of the islet Skeppsholmen in central Stockholm, Sweden, now serving as a youth hostel.

The ship was constructed by the Whitehaven Shipbuilding Company, located in Whitehaven, Cumberland (present-day Cumbria), and launched in February 1888. It was originally known as Dunboyne, after a town in County Meath, Ireland. Its maiden voyage was from Maryport, Cumberland to Portland, Oregon and it subsequently made voyages between Europe, Australia and the west coast of America. On its arrival in Sweden in 1915 it was renamed G. D. Kennedy and when the Swedish Navy bought it in 1923 it was given its present name after the shipbuilder and Vice Admiral Fredrik Henrik af Chapman (1721–1808). The Navy used it as a training ship and as such it made several trips around the world before serving as a barracks during WW2. Its final voyage was in 1934.

In 1947 the Stockholm City Museum saved the ship from being broken up, and since 1949 af Chapman has been managed by the Svenska Turistföreningen (STF, Swedish Tourist Association). It serves as a youth hostel with 285 beds. During 2008 the ship underwent a comprehensive restoration. While the ship was being worked on in a drydock, the adjacent youth hostel Skeppsholmen remained open. Usually, the af Chapman and Skeppsholmen – not to be confused with the islet of the same name, on which both are situated – are run as a single hostel, with the af Chapman offering accommodation and Skeppsholmen housing the reception, a kitchen for guests, and other facilities. The ship is docked on the shore next to the Admiralty House.

Hon byggdes 1888 i Whitehaven i England för trafik på Australien. Hon såldes till Skandinavien 1908, tjänade som skolskepp 1915–1934 och är sedan 1949 ett vandrarhem och känt landmärke vid Skeppsholmen i Stockholm.

af Chapman byggdes som Dunboyne av Whitehaven Shipbuilding Company i Whitehaven i England för trafik på Australien för Charles E. Martin & Co i Dublin. År 1908 såldes hon åt Leif Gundersen i Porsgrunn i Norge för 3625 pund. 1915 såldes hon till Emil Knudsen i Lillesand och samma år vidare till Rederiaktiebolaget Transatlantic för 7500 pund.

Transatlantic bytte skeppets namn till G.D. Kennedy, efter en av initiativtagarna till rederiet, George Douglas Kennedy, och byggde om fartyget för användning som skolskepp. Hon fick registernumret 5734 och signalen JVKL. Hon hade då Göteborg som hemmahamn, plats för åtta befälselever och seglade med frakt på oceanfart. Utbildningen ombord var tvåårig. Att kombinera fraktfart med utbildning var vanligt under denna tid. Hon seglade mestadels mellan Skandinavien och Australien.

År 1923 såldes skeppet till svenska flottan och ändrades till övningsskepp under namnet HMS af Chapman efter en av 1700-talets stora skeppsbyggare, Fredrik Henrik af Chapman (1721–1808). År 1934 togs hon ur aktiv tjänst. Fartyget inköptes 1947 av Stockholms stad och är sedan 1949 förtöjt vid Skeppsholmen och upplåtet till Svenska Turistföreningen som vandrarhem.

Fartyget genomgick en omfattande renovering som inleddes i oktober 2006 och färdigställdes i april 2008. Renoveringen, som var förlagd till Musköbasen, var ursprungligen planerad att ta nio månader men ändrades efter hand och totalt blev renoveringstiden det dubbla. af Chapman lades åter vid Skeppsholmen den 9 april 2008.

Hon har ett segelantal på 26 och är 41,60 meter hög.
