Peter's Stone "Explored" - a photo on Flickriver

            Peter's Stone or Gibbet Rock dominates the northern reaches of Cressbrook Dale in the Derbyshire White Peak. Legend holds that the last public hanging and gibbeting in Derbyshire took place near the limestone outcrop in 1815 when Anthony Lingard of Tideswell was hung and his body displayed in a gibbet for the murder of Hannah Oliver. She was the toll bar keeper on the turnpike road at nearby Wardlow Mires and was supposedly murdered by Lingard for a pair of red boots.
