In 1892, Ontario cart manufacturer Robert McLaughlin made his sons George and Sam partners. During a trip to the United States, to learn more about the automobile, Sam meets Billy Durant, owner of the Buick brand. In 1907, Durant landed at the McLaughlins in Oshawa and signed a 15-year agreement with them to supply Buick engines to the very recent McLaughlin Motor Car Company.
