Anna's hummingbird 2.jpg - a photo on Flickriver

            These two images were captured on a small potted pine tree beside my home. This bird, a female Anna's hummingbird, has been resident in the yard since winter started. She has been vigorously defending both feeders, with some success. The last few days have been in the -11C range with a windchill down into the -20C range, which is very cold (for hummingbirds). I am amazed at the toughness, resilience and intelligence in these birds. At one point the sugar solution was freezing, despite the heater, so I brought it into the house. Within seconds, she was at the kitchen window, telling me in no uncertain terms to get that feeder back out NOW!
