Als een lieveheersbeestje "gepest" wordt door zachtjes op hem te drukken, produceert hij een gele vloeistof. Dit gedrag heet "reflexbloeden". De vloeistof (hemolymfe), die tevoorschijn komt bij het femoro-tibiale gewricht van de poten, heeft een kwalijk geurtje en smaakt erg bitter. Vogels die een lieveheersbeestje oppakken, proeven dit 'bloed' en laten hem dan soms snel vallen.

Het rood met zwarte kleurpatroon is dan ook te beschouwen als een waarschuwing. Dat insecten of andere dieren hun giftigheid of vieze smaak etaleren door een felle kleur, wordt aposematische kleuring genoemd. De vieze smaak wordt veroorzaakt door een alkaloïde dat per soort verschilt. Er is aangetoond dat deze vloeistof van het zevenstippelig lieveheersbeestje giftig is voor koolmeeskuikens. Die van het tweestippelig lieveheersbeestje is dat niet. In België wordt aan kinderen vaak verteld dat het lieveheersbeestje 'gepist' (geplast) heeft wanneer het deze vloeistof achterlaat.

When a ladybug is "bullied" by gently pressing it, it produces a yellow liquid. This behavior is called "reflex bleeding". The liquid (hemolymph), which appears at the femoral tibial joint of the legs, has a bad smell and tastes very bitter. Birds that pick up a ladybug taste this 'blood' and sometimes drop it quickly.

The red with black color pattern can therefore be seen as a warning. The fact that insects or other animals display their toxicity or foul taste through a bright color is called aposematic coloring. The bad taste is caused by an alkaloid that varies by species. This seven-spotted ladybug fluid has been shown to be toxic to great tit chicks. That of the two-dot ladybird is not. In Belgium, children are often told that the ladybug has 'pissed' when it leaves this liquid behind.
