Dice Snake (Natrix tesselata) - portrait

            When I was a kid the local pet shop had a tankful of gorgeous grey-green snakes which I fell in love with instantly but (fortunately) I was not allowed to buy.  They were dice snakes, the most aquatic species in Europe.  It was great to be able to renew the love affair forty years on with the wild dice snakes of Lake Como in Italy, which were all along the shore catching fish and landing them on the beach.  It has upward facing eyes, better for spotting fish swimming above a submerged snake on the bottom as it waits in ambush and so do the nostrils which allow it to come up for air with only the very tip of the snout exposed.
