Paris, La Pyramide du Louvre - a photo on Flickriver

Tout commence par une exposition des plus beaux tableaux de la collection royale, qui se tient dans la Galerie royale de peinture installée au Palais du Luxembourg de 1750 à 1785 et qui connaît un énorme succès. Le marquis de Marigny, directeur général des Bâtiments du Roi, et son successeur le comte d'Angiviller élaborent alors le projet de faire du Louvre un musée permanent.
Le projet se transforme en loi le 27 juillet 1793, et l'inauguration prévue initialement le 10 août 1793 a lieu finalement le 8 novembre 1793, le musée prenant le nom de Muséum central des arts de la République. Créé d'abord comme lieu de formation pour les artistes de l'époque, ils étaient les seuls, jusqu'en 1855, à pouvoir y entrer en semaine, le public n'y est admis que le dimanche.
Sous l'Empire, le Louvre prend le nom de musée Napoléon. Dominique-Vivant Denon en est le premier directeur ; il en fait le plus grand des musées du monde et il préside à son démantèlement lors de la chute de l'Empereur (en deux temps). Le musée est agrandi par Percier et Fontaine, qui construisent l'aile de la rue de Rivoli.
D'autres transformations ont lieu sous Napoléon III et notamment la réalisation du grand dessein : La galerie nord reliant le Louvre aux Tuileries est achevée par l'adjonction de bâtiments construits par Hector-Martin Lefuel (sur les plans de Louis Visconti). D'autres également sont rajoutés au sud pour assurer une symétrie à ce désormais gigantesque ensemble architectural. Mais en 1871 le musée est incendié lors de la Commune, et l'architecte Lefuel doit reconstruire une partie des bâtiments. Les Tuileries ne seront jamais reconstruites, et après plusieurs années de délibération, les ruines seront finalement rasées en 1882.

The museum opened on 10 August 1793 with an exhibition of 537 paintings, the majority of the works being royal and confiscated church property. Because of structural problems with the building, the museum was closed in 1796 until 1801. The size of the collection increased under Napoleon and the museum was renamed the Musée Napoléon. After the defeat of Napoléon at Waterloo, many works seized by his armies were returned to their original owners. The collection was further increased during the reigns of Louis XVIII and Charles X, and during the Second French Empire the museum gained 20,000 pieces. Holdings have grown steadily through donations and gifts since the Third Republic. As of 2008, the collection is divided among eight curatorial departments: Egyptian Antiquities; Near Eastern Antiquities; Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities; Islamic Art; Sculpture; Decorative Arts; Paintings; Prints and Drawings.
