Dortmund-Bövinghausen, Zeche Zollern: Victor, the tiny tank engine

            These are details of a very modest historic steam locomotive. It's Victor, the tiny tank engine. Victor features the lowest possible number of wheels (0-4-0) and represents the technological standards of the 1880s. The historic locomoitve was built by a company wich bore a pretty impressive name: It was called the "Actiengesellschaft für Locomotivbau Hohenzollern Düsseldorf". Victor went into service in 1908, and it was the 2.329th engine the Hohenzollern enterprise produced. The company was in its 36th year back then and had only 21 more years to survive. For in 1929 Hohenzollern failed and closed down after having made 4.520 locomotives in total.
I took the images of Victor at the site of the industrial heritage museum "Zeche Zollern". Unfortunately the locomotive was parked under a low roof, that's why I only could photograph details.

When I stumbled across this beautiful piece of railway history in Dortmund I was not aware that I had seen this cutie before. But in fact I even had played on it as a child. Here's the story: When Victor was completed it was delivered to a steel rolling plant south of Düsseldorf, the Wuppermann AG of Leverkusen. There it earned its keep for several decades. When the locomotive had become too old to remain in service it was transferred to a playground nearby. As a child I lived not far from that very spot. So when I was cycling around with my friends we would visit Victor from time to time, climb into the cab etc. Victor was merely a heap of junk at that time. If I remember correctly the name plates were gone, so we had no idea of the identity and the name of the ancient fourwheeler. Later I moved to other places and forgot about the tiny tank engine. So when I did some research about the locomotive I photographed at the "Zollern" colliery in Dortmund I was facing a big surprise: It turned out that Victor had met before - not less than some 40 years ago! Meanwhile the former heap of junk had been carefully restored. Thus the locomotive looks completely different now, wearing an elegant olive and livery with black and red lining. I will show a colour image of this later.
