Barbary Ground Squirrel - a photo on Flickriver

            Whilst enjoying my family holiday at the Canary Islands our hotel is next to a beach with a large colony of Barbary ground squirrels. Originally these squirrels come from the Western Sahara region but during the 60’s they were introduced as pets on Fuerteventura. Whilst more than a few escaped they now thrive on the island and this is mainly due to the fact that they are being fed by tourists. I am a bit torn by a double moral. At one hand I much enjoy their presence, but at the other hand they don’t belong here and their existence is much depending on tourism.
