            Took this walking up from the Cowgate (lowest road in the Old Town) up the steep slope to the Royal Mile, via Stevenlaw's Close, just to give an idea how astonishingly narrow it is - I couldn't stand with both arms out here and when someone else came the other way we had to turn sideways to let each other pass. A close, in case you are wondering, is a sort of covered or semi-covered alleway between the tall, old buildings (thought to be from "enclosed" or "enclosure"). Even in later (by later I mean Victorian - that's modern here!) tenement flats like mine the common stairwell is still generally referred to here as "the close"
