Kneepads - a photo on Flickriver

Kneepads

            Chilean Flamingos (Phoenicopterus chilensis) preen and mill about in a Bolivian lagoon.  Flamingos are filter feeders using a mechanism very similar to whales- they immerse their heads under water and filter water through fine filters in plates (similar to baleen) in their beaks, collecting algae, crustaceans, or molluscs.  They use their tongues or sometimes move their heads back and forth to move water across the filters in their beaks.  I've hypothesized that flamingos and whales are actually closely related based on their similar feeding behaviors, an approach consistent with the emphasis of "alternative facts" and how science is approached by the U.S. Federal government.

This shot is heavily cropped with marginal clarity, but it shows off the lovely patterning of this flaming species, particularly the bright red stylish "kneepads."
