Tunupa - a photo on Flickriver

Tunupa

            Rising almost 5500 feet (1700 m) above the Salar de Uyuni, the volcano Tunupa (5,321 m/ 17,457 feet) dominates the northern skyline.  Now dormant, Tunupa was active with multiple eruptions between 1.6 million years ago to around 450,000 years ago.  Glaciers carved its slopes during three main advances, the earliest around 160,000 year ago and the last around 15,000 years ago (Pleistocene).

At the base of the volcano are several small villages, including Tuhua and Jirira.  There are multiple rock walls on Tunupa's slopes which mark different llama and alpaca pastures, which go high up on the volcano.

Under the shallow surface water of the Salar de Uyuni you can see remnant polygons that are formed by repeated wetting-drying/ contraction-expansion cycles.
