One in 2 trillion - a photo on Flickriver

One in 2 trillion

            ... give or take a trillion.  The plump part (galactic center) of the Milky Way, our home galaxy, floats above the Indian Peaks in the southern Rocky Mountains.  The peaks include (from left to right) North and South Arapahoe Peaks, Mount Albion, and Kiowa and Navajo Peaks.  The green and pink haze is from airglow, subtle emission of light from atmospheric molecules energized by the sun.

Recent work using data from the Hubble telescope now puts the number of galaxies in the universe at 2 trillion, up from the mere 200 billion estimated a couple of years ago. Even with the odds that other planets out there have life on them, I'd be content with the one we already have.
