Pothole mirrors

Monuments of Cedar Mesa sandstone are reflected in the ephemeral water of a pothole near the junction of the Green and Colorado Rivers in the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park. These desert potholes contain a surprising array of organisms well adapted to the extreme conditions (temperature, dry-wet cycles, uv light, chemistry see pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/70027811 and www.nps.gov/cany/learn/nature/pools.htm for additional info). One of the more interesting creatures found in these potholes are Fairy Shrimp (over 300 different species throughout the western U.S.), that emerge from drought tolerant eggs in the summer "rainy" season to complete their life cycle. The Fairy Shrimp eggs can live for up to 15 years, and can be carried from one pool to another by winds during dry periods.
