Standing Rocks to Sky Island - a photo on Flickriver

            Sunlight breaks through dark clouds and virga to illuminate part of the mesa that is the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park (CNP), including Candlestick Tower, as framed by a group of the Standing Rocks in the Maze District of CNP.  The Standing Rocks are residual 225 mya Organ Shale bands (part of the Cutler formation), sometimes capped with White Rim Sandstone as seen on the Chocolate Drops, near the middle of the photo.  A corner post of the Wall campsite is visible in the lower left. Although the wind was a persistent feature the campsite afforded enough protection for tents, and magnificent views into the canyons of the Maze and off to the Island in the Sky District.

I have wanted to visit the Maze for many decades since gazing at it on maps, from Island in the Sky and the Needles, and reading about it in various works, notably Ed Abbey’s books.  We spent 5 days there and barely scratched the surface of the area, although we did scratch our vehicles getting in- not a road for step-up bars or tow hitches.
