Pectols Pyramid - a photo on Flickriver

Pectols Pyramid

            While much of the terrain at the top of Capitol Reef is rounded (like domes, thus "Capitol" Reef), Pectols Pyramid cuts a shapely outline. The pyramid is composed of Navajo Sandstone, mostly white with a few light orange or yellow bands.

Note the unusual black rocks in the foreground. These boulders are of volcanic origin from eruptions around 20 million years ago. They were carried down from the top of Thousand Lakes Mountain to the west (right). Their rounded shapes suggest they were once cobbles in an ancient river that washed them down to their present position.

I was pleased with this composition, which I found just off the Navajo Knobs hiking trail.  However a quick look on the web and through Flickr shows at least a dozen shots from exactly the same spot.
