I don't usually post more than a photo a day, but I thought a more detailed view of the James's/ Puna flamingos (Phoenicoparrus jamesi) in the previous post was warranted.  This species is found in a fairly limited geographic range of the Altiplano in Peru, Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina.  Four sites account for 50% of their population, creating a potential conservation concern.

Their grazing strategy is interesting, akin to the one used by whales to filter feed crustaceans in the ocean.  Flamingos feed by immersing their heads under water and flowing water through fine filters in plates (similar to baleen) in their beaks, collecting algae, crustaceans, or mollusks.  They use their tongues or sometimes move their heads back and forth to move water across the filters in their beaks.
