Fiery Furnace

            Sandstone fins blaze in the last light of the day in the Fiery Furnace, a maze of passageways and small valleys in Arches National Park. The rocks slope toward the Salt Valley, which was formed when water percolated below the layer of sandstone and dissolved a large deposit of salt, a remnant of ancient inland seas that dried up. The collapse of the salt deposit caused the cap of sandstone to crack as it dropped, resulting in the fins and arches we see today.

In the distance the Book Cliffs also catch the light from the setting sun. The cliffs are at the edge of the Tavaputs and Roan plateaus, running nearly 250 miles (400 km) in Utah and western Colorado.
